iHDTV™ and the University of Washington campus on display at SC08
ResearchChannel sent high-definition video stream from UW to Austin, Texas

SEATTLE — Attendees of SC08, the annual international conference for high-performance computing networking, storage and analysis, were able to watch the University of Washington campus live in high-definition from the conference floor in Austin, Texas this week.

NTT Labs of Japan demonstrated their new uncompressed high-definition television over the Internet product, XG-2, at SC08, including a demonstration of interoperability with the iHDTV™ platform.

iHDTV is a software suite consisting of software modules that work with commercially available components to capture, packetize and transport high-definition video in various formats over Internet Protocol networks, and was developed by engineers at the University of Washington in collaboration with the ResearchChannel consortium.

Using iHDTV technology, University of Washington engineers broadcast a live, high-definition feed from a video camera atop UW’s Kane Hall to the conference, which concludes Thursday, Nov. 20. This demonstration took place in the University of Osaka’s booth at SC08.

“This successful demonstration and partnership with NTT Labs is another milestone in our ongoing effort to enhance collaborative arts and sciences through Internet high-definition video technologies where the highest resolution and the lowest latency possible are a mandate,” said Jim DeRoest, director of Streaming Media Technologies for the University of Washington and ResearchChannel.
